Official Flower

Dog and Flower

Two years ago,

I ran along the Superior Hiking Trail

with my dog.

We saw a violently violet flower

right next to the constant hum of

an interstate highway.

Neither of us knew what it was.

My daughter sent me a photo

with her phone this week.

She told me there are ten

blue flag irises

in our garden this year.

She reported this is better

than the two we had last year.

Daughter’s Photo

Last year, she told me that

the blue flag iris

is her favorite flower.

A flower with such blue that

her blue-gray irises are only distant

color cousins that

encircle her pupils

and let in the light.

We have lived in

this Duluth house for fifteen years.

The irises have always been there.

My daughter is twelve.

The irises have always been there.

We ran to the flower with no name.

The irises have always been there.

I didn’t plant them.

I didn’t see them.

Decades passed until

I saw what was

in my own garden.

Pay attention.

Fifty years to find

a blue flag iris.

Pay attention.

Fifty years to find

your favorite.

Now,

Quebec and I

both have

an official flower.
