Sam was tired from beating me up yesterday, so it was back to just me and the dog. Went to Spirit Mountain Campground spur where we left off yesterday. Parked at the Chalet and ran over Skyline to connect. One of those loops where you go down hill and loop all up at the end. Super.

I did the Wild Duluth 50k put on by Andy and Kim Holak in 2010. It started in Jay Cooke and followed all of these sections of the SHT toward town. I remember almost none of the trail, except for broad strokes. This project has reintroduced me to sections I saw before, but don’t remember because I was cross-eyed from fatigue.

I remember getting to the feed station at the bottom of Spirit Mountain, though. Ultras are renowned for having extravagant feed stops. I always thought it was silly. About 3 or 4 hours into my ultra, when I got to the bottom of Spirit, I didn’t think it was silly. I shoved whole handfuls of M&M’s and pretzels into my face. I practically drained a whole two liter bottle of fully leaded Coca Cola. I finally understood. You can’t just eat Gu packets for seven and a half hours.

Today was just an hour though. Leo is beginning a bad habit. He runs right behind me. I can feel his whiskers on the back of my calves while I’m running. He bumps me now and then. I think he’s trying to take me out. If the dog comes home and I don’t, blame him.
